John Foster Projects promotes from within by upskilling workforce

WHILE the construction industry may be enduring challenging times, Managing Director John Foster has ensured the longevity of his business by developing a highly-skilled, confident and committed Mackay project team.
It’s an exciting day for the Mackay-based John Foster Projects team as Managing Director John Foster announces the promotion of two well-deserving, long-standing employees.
Founded in 1993, John Foster Projects is a leading Central and North Queensland building contractor working in the commercial, residential and industrial construction sectors.
Operations Manager, Shaun O’Kelly and Project Manager, Dennis Halliday will be stepping up and taking more ownership of the company’s day-to-day operations.
Mr Foster will remain Managing Director of the company, however in a statement to staff, he said he’s looking forward to spending a little less time in the office and more time with his family in Eimeo, Mackay.
The culmination of many years of progression planning, Mr O’Kelly and Mr Halliday have an impressive tenure of more than 35 years with John Foster Projects.
“They’ve been instrumental in executing highly complex and technical projects, many of which have been recognised by Master Builders Queensland with regional and state-level awards,” Mr Foster said.
“Shaun and Dennis are both well-known and respected among our clients, consultants, subcontractors, employees and the Mackay community. They have an outstanding reputation as highly effective, competent and honest industry professionals.”
“I think regional areas often get a bad rap amid a skills shortage – especially in senior management roles. But by upskilling our own workers and progression planning, we’ve been able to promote two well-deserving employees into these senior management roles. We’re keeping work and jobs within our region – this is a fantastic outcome for our business and our community.”
Over the past 20 years, Mr O’Kelly and Mr Halliday have performed numerous roles for the company, lending themselves well to senior management positions.
“They know the systems and processes that underpin the company’s success like the back of their hands,” Mr Foster explained.
Mr Halliday started with John Foster Projects as an apprentice in 1998. Over the past two decades, he’s gained invaluable experience across a diverse range of projects and held various roles including leading hand, site foreman and site manager.
“I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge of a more senior role in the management and continued success of John Foster Projects,” Mr Halliday said.
Mr O’Kelly started his tenure as a site foreman in 1999, and performed both project management and estimating roles for the company before assuming his current position as Operations Manager.
“I look forward to continuing to uphold the values, integrity and commitment provided by John Foster Projects,” Mr O’Kelly said.
Mr Foster’s technical expertise and depth of understanding of regional construction operations will continue to serve the current and future clients of the company.
“Applying a high level of expertise and achieving one hundred per cent compliance with the project requirements and safety and quality standards remain at the core of our company’s operational integrity,” he said.
“Our loyal and valued customers will continue to enjoy the high level of quality and satisfaction that our projects are known for.”
To ensure continued compliance with sweeping changes faced by the building and construction industry, the company’s sound financial management will continue under the guidance of in-house Chartered Accountant, Lynn Foster.
“By continuing to manage our capital effectively, we can ensure our projects are delivered on time and on budget,” she said.
“Subcontractors will also continue to benefit with prompt and fair payment terms.”
